Hey everyone, here's my very skilled production team.
We had our first meeting today and discussed some of our initial ideas in which I'll be posting later on. Any who, meet the team!
To your left you have none other than your main Taju. I'm 17 years old, my favourite genre of music is Hip-Hop, Afrobeat and Folk. I am currently studying Media, Economics and History. The skills I can contribute the team include filming and editing.
Here is Nigeria's own Abi Raji who is striking a vogue face because I caught her at the right angle. She's 17 years old she is currently studying Media, Business, Science and Health & Social Care. Her favourite genre of music is Bashment and Afrobeat. Her skills include posing for the camera.
Finally, here's Miss Ebun Awosiyan who ddin't want to get caught slipping on the camera hence why she has covered up her face. She's currently studying Media, Business and ICT. Her favourite genre of music is afrobeats and bashment. Her skills include filming.
Today, my team and I started working on our Moodboard for the music video. We used google images to search for the type of photos that relate to the Indie Rock Band genre. Here are some photos of us designing the moodboard.
Narrative based music videos emulate a storyline. The artist can feature in the story but that isn't always the case. This style of music video is often used in the pop genre to tell a romantic story, for example Sam Smith's 'I'm Not The Only One'. Sam Smith doesn't take part in the story and uses actors to perform instead.
On the other hand, there some artists that will feature in the narrative such as Taylor Swift in 'Wildest Dreams'
Cinematic
Cinematic music videos have high production values and feature a storyline liked the narrative based music videos. The main difference in that the cinematic music videos provide a 'film styled' quality to it. An example of this is Ed Sheeran's 'A Team'
Performance Based
Performance based videos focus mainly on filming a performance styled music video which normally include some sort of stage and crowd, An example of this would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'Californication'.
Animation Animation music videos use either digital or stop motion animation instead of real life footage. The Cribs' entire music video for mirror kissers uses animation as a background with use of a green screen. Although this method is time consuming it allows the artist to create effects that may not have been possible, especially on a small budget.
Pastiche
Pastiches are based on features from another genre/time frame. Unlike parodies, pastiches do not insult the texts. Madonna's 'Vogue' uses influence from the latter 20th century craze over fashion.
As live
The 'As live' styled music videos contain concert footage to make it seem as if the entire music video was filmed live. An example of this would be Muse's 'Follow Me' as it shows them walking on stage and performing.
Parody
Parody musc videos mock another artist's song. An example of a parody is Hot Chip's 'I Feel Better' which mocks the typical boy band whilst fan girls scream and cry over them in the video.
Intertextuality
Intertextuality music videos refer to other existing texts. An example of this is Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night' as they include credits at the start and end to give it the film effect. Also the characters wear 80's clothes and they use 'friendplace' instead of 'facebook' to socialise.
Concept
This is a style of music video that is based around a concept or an idea. They tend to be rather unique/utilise a particular editing or film technique. An example of a contextual music video is the Foo Fighters' 'Best of You'.
Today I was introduced into the exciting world of photoshop editing along with my peers. We were guided through a step by step tutorial from our teacher in which he led us to the Media Studies A2 website in which he had to see the list of instructions. These instructions included generating a random photo, band name and album name on a variety of different websites.
The first band name I generated was some random psychiatrist named 'Hossein' something, I forgot his last name, oops. But I sneakingly generated it again and got the name 'Pleasant Valley', which sounded much cooler.
Then I went on to get my picture in which I was pretty impressed with, it was a cool picture of a budgie resting on a ledge along with a bright background allowing the name 'Pleasant Valley' to blend well with it.
Now the most annoying part of this process had to be when I generated a random album name. I was given 'American people than golf has us', this makes no grammatical sense?! You can understand my frustration.
Any who I managed to find a way to incorporate it on my album cover and made it look decent. I had to be creative by changing the colour of each letter to a colour of the American flag, clever, I know. Without no further delay, here is the final end product!
During the exercise we quickly grasped the concept that in order to create the emotion behind each lyric, we had to sing out loud which allowed the music video to be successful in demonstrating the sync between the track and the video.
Also we were able to learn our lyrics very fast but it did take a few tries before they fully stuck in our memories. We were able to use a vast range of camera angles well and incorporated each shot when appropriate.
In addition, we were able to edit the video to a satisfactory level, cutting when appropriate and ensuring the lip sync went well.
What could be improved?
We could've included more shots such as close ups and used the dolly in order to capture better footage of the singers
Also on one occasion editing was not completely accurate as there were a few moments in which the lips didn't sync with the music and therefore made the video appear amateur and poor.
Furthermore, in terms of editing there were periods in which the pacing could have been faster in order to make the music video to be more modern, instead it was slow and some points and fast at others. This meant that it had no constant pace throughout in which the viewer could vibe to.
